Stromnetz Berlin GmbH, the Berlin distribution system operator, plans to invest some €1.4 billion in grid infrastructure over the next ten years.

The future development of the Berlin electricity grid will be determined by five trends. A steady increase in decentralised generation assets, population growth, the rise of electric vehicles, the increasingly crucial role of electricity in the economy, and growing communication requirements in the electricity grid: these are the main trends that will definitively shape the development of the city and its electricity grid over the next ten years

Dr Helmar Rendez, Chair of the Management Board at Stromnetz Berlin GmbH, who today presented these trends and highlighted them with the aid of concretely planned projects, believes that the Berlin electricity grid is well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. "Our long-term investment programme means that we can guarantee the level of supply reliability that Berliners have grown to expect from us, even into the future. As an infrastructure operator, we face the challenge of anticipating significant developments in the city. Over the next ten years, we will focus our activities and an investment framework of around €1.4 billion on the five identified trends and thereby be conducive to the transitions that the city will undergo in these areas."

Detailed information on the expected trends and projects can be found in the presentation provided.
