27.06.2017

A damaged high-voltage cable close to the Wuhlheide substation led to a major power failure today at 12:54 pm in the eastern part of the borough of Treptow-Köpenick.

A damaged high-voltage cable close to the Wuhlheide substation led to a major power failure today at 12:54 pm in the eastern part of the borough of Treptow-Köpenick. The following areas were affected: Baumschulenweg, Biesdorf, Friedrichshagen, Grünau, Johannisthal, Kaulsdorf, Köpenick, Müggelheim, Niederschöneweide, Oberschöneweide, Plänterwald and Rahnsdorf. In total, 67,700 households and 4,300 businesses were left without power for two hours.

By switching to another grid area, it was possible to restore power to the majority of the affected homes and businesses by 3:15 pm. Just 1,400 households and 180 businesses in an area north of Berlin-Köpenick station experienced a slight delay in having their power restored.

A closer examination after the power was restored revealed that civil engineering work at a roadworks site on Rummelsburger Landstraße – in close proximity to the Wuhlheide substation – was the actual cause.
