Smart Meter Gateway Administration: Stromnetz Berlin launches IT system from Bosch Software Innovations

18.01.2017

By launching the IT system for Smart Meter Gateway Administration (SMGWA), Meter Data Management (MDM) and Rollout Process Management, Stromnetz Berlin has created an important requirement for smart metering systems to be rolled out.

In 2016, the Act on the Digitisation of the Energy Transition and thus the Metering Point Operating Act (MsbG) came into force. For Stromnetz Berlin GmbH, this creates the essential prerequisites for its new role as a metering point operator for modern metering facilities and smart meter systems.

In 2016, Stromnetz Berlin commissioned Bosch Software Innovations GmbH to build the necessary SMGWA/MDM software. The IT system has now been successfully handed over to Stromnetz Berlin for the first phase. It enables tests to be run under real-life conditions in selected customer plants. In the first phase, the focus is on checking that operations have commenced smoothly, reading data at defined intervals, secure data transfer and carrying out the general business processes.

Ronny Stark, Project Manager at Stromnetz Berlin: "By implementing the software solution, which is already certified as a cloud service according to ISO 27001, we are a step closer to realising our plan to take over the new market role of Smart Meter Gateway Administrator. The software from Bosch Software Innovations allows us to fully automate these highly complex processes."

"The transformation of the previous IT systems in electricity grid operations into a secure IT system architecture is one of the greatest challenges facing network operators. It enables flexible action in a new digital market environment and at the same time, maps out existing operating processes", says Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of Stromnetz Berlin's Board of Management.

The cooperation with Bosch Software Innovations will continue beyond the pilot operating phase. As well as launching and servicing the final software platform for highly-automated operation of smart metering systems, Bosch Software Innovations has also guaranteed the construction of a scalable and secure solution for Smart Meter Gateway Administration and Meter Data Management. Furthermore, software-based images of smart and efficient processes are being developed, which allow fast reaction times in the event of operational disruption with minimal input from staff.

"We're delighted that we've been able to demonstrate our Smart Meter Gateway Administration expertise to Stromnetz Berlin", says Michael Hahn, COO and Managing Director of Bosch Software Innovations. "As one of the first distribution network operators, Stromnetz Berlin is taking a major step towards interlinking the energy landscape. Our software helps Stromnetz Berlin to offer its end customers new value-added services by providing meter readings."

Brief presentation of the technology:

Modern metering devices
Modern metering devices are digital electricity meters which measure electricity consumption and save it for a set period of time. Detailed consumption figures and the screen showing current performance can only be accessed by entering a personal ID number (PIN). As such, a modern metering device cannot be read remotely; however, a smart metering system can be added using an extra communication unit.

Smart metering systems
Smart metering systems are composed of one or several modern metering devices and a secure communication unit, known as the Smart Meter Gateway. The Smart Meter Gateway manages access rights, processes meter readings, provides contract-compliant data to authorised market stakeholders and provides for management of generation and consumption facilities.
