3. Update: Power outage in Berlin-Johannisthal

Supplies should be restored by Thursday evening

10.09.2025, 08:16 AM

Following the fire at two electricity pylons in Johannisthal on 9 September, Stromnetz Berlin is gradually reconnecting more customers to the grid. Only around 20,000 households and businesses are currently still without electricity. The civil engineering work at the Johannisthal fire site, which began yesterday lunchtime, continued on Tuesday night.

Background to the work:

Unfortunately, the lines damaged by the fire are currently unusable, and so Stromnetz Berlin is using a technical "trick" to join several cables together on site in Johannisthal. This gives the electricity a new and alternative route to customers. Several cables were pulled out of the ground on site throughout the night. Today, they are connected with large couplings called sockets.

These joints are more than two metres in size and connect arm-thick cables. They must be installed in a dust-free environment. This is a very complex task that takes several hours.

We therefore believe that the power will be restored to everyone again by Thursday evening.
