Topping-out ceremony for the extension of the Tiefwerder substation
Milestone for electricity supply in Spandau
31.07.2025
Stromnetz Berlin continues to adopt a special approach to the security of electricity supply in Spandau. The Tiefwerder substation in Spandau is a facility from the 1970s that is now in need of modernisation. However, there is not enough space at the site for a whole new building. Accordingly, an extension that incorporates modern technology has been under construction next to the building for the past year and is set to be completed by 2031. At the same time, the existing plant is being remodelled during ongoing operations.
The topping-out ceremony for the extension was held today, 31 July, with the State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises, Dr Severin Fischer, Spandau's District Councillor for Construction, Planning, Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation, Thorsten Schatz, Managing Director of Berlin Energie & Netz Holding GmbH, Stephan Boy, as well as Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director, Dr Erik Landeck.
Dr. Severin Fischer, Chair of the Supervisory Board at Stromnetz Berlin and State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises: "The Tiefwerder substation supplies electricity to 10,000 households in Spandau. With the investment of around 27 million euros in the substation, we are future-proofing the supply. This is a further step in the investment programme that Stromnetz Berlin is implementing in order to double the grid capacity. The demands on the electricity grid are growing, for example due to significantly more e-mobility on the roads, industrial transformation and the feed-in of solar energy. All Berliners, as well as businesses, can rely on a secure electricity supply."
Thorsten Schatz, Spandau's District Councillor for Construction, Planning, Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation: "The expansion of the Tiefwerder substation is a forward-looking project that will not only stabilise our energy supply, but will also adapt it to the requirements of coming years. The investment in modern technology and the modernisation of the facility are crucial to ensure a reliable electricity supply for the citizens of Spandau both now and in the future."
Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director Dr Erik Landeck says: "Our investment programme for Berlin will reach further milestones in 2025 – two of them in Spandau alone. The expansion of the Tiefwerder substation is one of these and is fully on schedule. We are delighted to be celebrating the topping-out ceremony here today thanks to good communication and cooperation with the district and trusting engagement with the local community. The extension of the substation will soon make an important contribution to the district's electricity supply with modern and climate-friendly technology."
The 14 by 18 metre extension has been under construction since the summer of 2024. Following the planned completion of the building construction, the electrical engineering required for a modern power distribution facility will then be installed from 2026 onwards. Commissioning is scheduled for 2031.
The new building will have the same futuristic façade design as the existing building. Equipping the roof of the building with a solar energy system at a later date has already been considered in the project. The Tiefwerder substation is one of around 20 Stromnetz Berlin facilities that were commissioned in the 1970s.
