Following the arson attack in Lichterfelde Power supply restored to more households and businesses
06.01.2026
Following the arson attack on a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal in Berlin-Lichterfelde, over the last few hours, Stromnetz Berlin has reconnected more domestic and commercial customers in the south-west of Berlin to the grid. For example, power has been restored to all 74 of the care facilities affected. Power is also available again for the Mexikoplatz, Nikolassee and Wannsee S-Bahn stations.
Currently (status: 6.1, 12.45 pm), around 24,700 households and around 1,120 commercial customers in the Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, Wannsee and Lichterfelde districts are still without electricity. Work is progressing better than planned. It will probably be Thursday (8 January 2026) before everyone has electricity again. During commissioning, power cuts lasting for a few minutes may reoccur.
In the past few hours, 36 large emergency power generators - referred to as ‘emergency power systems’ - have also been put into operation. Some of these appliances the size of overseas shipping containers. They were provided by a number of other electricity grid operators from Hamburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. The fire service in North Rhine-Westphalia also provides emergency power generators of this kind. Over the next few hours, the German Army [Bundeswehr] is going to be deploying a further 31 emergency power systems.
We ask all those whose power supply has been restored to keep their power consumption to an absolute minimum for the time being. Until further notice, please do not use larger appliances such as washing machines or tumble dryers. Please also desist from charging electric vehicles via the wallbox at home in the immediate future. Instead, please use alternative charging points outside the affected neighbourhoods.
