At a cost of around €3.5 million, Stromnetz Berlin GmbH is having the underground electricity grid replaced in Mierendorffplatz in Charlottenburg. Local domestic customers and business customers will be able to enjoy improved supply quality. With its total length standing at a good 20 kilometres, the new cable system is the Berlin electricity grid operator's response to the growing demands faced by the electricity grid. The replacement can be put down to a number of factors, such as the expansion of renewable energies and the rise of electromobility.

The new cables are being laid in phases, on a street-by-street basis. This minimises the restrictions caused to both residents and businesses. Construction work got underway in May 2013, and works are currently taking place in Sömmeringstrasse. The upgrading work will be completed at the beginning of 2014.
