- Another all-time high in investments planned - 2025: €467 million
- New allocation procedure for very large grid connections

Stromnetz Berlin can reflect on a successful financial year 2024. The company achieved a good result with profit after tax of €150.9 million. In addition to this, investments rose to a new all-time high of €367 million. For 2025, the company is planning to invest even more in infrastructure: €467 million have been earmarked for the maintenance, expansion and increased digitalisation of the electricity grid infrastructure.
At today's annual press conference, Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director Dr Erik Landeck and Chair of the Supervisory Board, Dr Severin Fischer, spoke about topics and projects for the current year, as well as the company's balance sheet. At the same time, the Managing Director gave an outlook on the necessary expansion of the Berlin electricity grid and explained the next steps in the allocation proecedure for grid capacities for particularly large grid connections, which was introduced in 2024.
"Berlin continues to grow and we are growing with it. Last year, we passed the 2,000 employee mark at Stromnetz Berlin for the first time. This dedicated staff ensures safe operation around the clock, as well as excellent supply quality in comparison with the rest of Germany. The year 2025 and the following years up to 2034 will be characterised by further major investments. Our goal is to connect 24 substations and nodes to the grid in this decade. More than 5,500 kilometres of new cables are being planned," comments Dr Erik Landeck.
"Stromnetz Berlin has displayed excellent development over the past four years since its remunicipalisation as a state-owned enterprise. In light of the highly positive operating results for 2024, I would first like to thank the more than 2,000 employees of Stromnetz Berlin for their hard work and commitment. As the key to the energy, heating and mobility transition, the electricity grid will also be strengthened in the coming years. To this end, we are keen to invest around
€2.9 billion in the grid by 2029. This strengthens Berlin as a business location and makes it attractive for investment," adds Dr Severin Fischer, Chair of the Supervisory Board.
Good operating result in 2024
In the financial year 2024, Stromnetz Berlin GmbH recorded earnings after taxes of €150.9 million (previous year: €98.1 million). The company's sales revenue rose to €1,533.2 million following €1,351.9 million in the previous year. Stromnetz Berlin still believes that the grid capacity will need to be doubled over the next ten years, although electricity transmission through the Berlin grid remained largely unchanged in 2024 at 12,275 gigawatt hours (previous year: 12,210 GWh). The concession fee paid to the state of Berlin in 2024 was €138.4 million (2023: €139.7 million).
The number of employees at the company rose to more than 2,000 for the first time in the past financial year – comprising some 1,977 regular employees and 144 trainees.
Operating in Berlin, the company runs one of the largest urban electricity distribution grids, stretching over around 35,700 kilometres – almost as long as once around the earth, with 99 percent routed underground. The grid currently includes 71 substations and 17 grid nodes – these are oversized high-voltage "distribution sockets".
New connection capacity allocation procedure for the largest customers
Stromnetz Berlin received specific grid connection requests for more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity in 2024. This corresponds to more than half of Berlin's current grid load or 12 times the annual peak load of Potsdam. Not only was it impossible to foresee this level, but achieving it from a technical perspective will require long-term grid expansion measures. The company has therefore introduced a new allocation procedure (repartitioning) for very large grid connections (greater than 3.5 megawatts connected load). The procedure is based on the capacity available in the grid areas, both currently and in the foreseeable future, which is then to be distributed fairly on a pro rata basis among all those requesting it. In the previous procedure, requests were processed based on the time they were received. The new allocation procedure only affects a very small group of major customers. To be clear, this procedure expressly does not apply to 99% of customers in Berlin.
On its company website, Stromnetz Berlin has today published the grid capacities that are to be allocated to the largest customers. Accordingly, interested parties now have the opportunity to submit requests for capacity allocation up to 30 June 2025.
"We currently still have free capacity for particularly large grid connections, especially in north-east and south-west Berlin, as well as to a limited extent in south-east Berlin. The exact figures have been available on our website since 9 April," comments Dr Erik Landeck.
"With the repartitioning procedure, Stromnetz Berlin GmbH has developed an innovative process to ensure that Berlin remains an attractive location for new businesses in the future. In this way, we are creating transparency in the awarding of connection services for all major customers, from heat supply to data centres," explains Dr Severin Fischer.
