Stromnetz Berlin is ISMS certified as a secure network operator and smart meter gateway administrator

Stromnetz Berlin, the fundamentally responsible metering point operator in the network area of the capital city, is now operating as a certified smart meter gateway administrator. The company has therefore augmented its metering point operation portfolio pursuant to certification according to ISO 27001:2013 and the associated proof of compliance with technical guideline TR-03109-6 of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).
The certification confirms that the Information Security Management System (ISMS) established to secure network operation and gateway administration conforms to stringent statutory security requirements.
It also confirms that Stromnetz Berlin, as the operator of critical infrastructure, is able to adequately protect the systems and data necessary for the control of that infrastructure against manipulation and external attacks. This makes Stromnetz Berlin one of the few network operators that is certified not only for secure network operation, but for the operation of smart meter infrastructure.
Implementation of the targeted security level with an ISMS has a profound impact on existing organisations and their processes. Along with information technology (IT), special attention must be given to areas such as company organisation, personal security, physical security, access control, fault management and business continuity planning.
The smart meter gateway administrator is the only party authorised to configure smart meter systems, monitor technical operations and administer the keys and certificates of smart meter systems. Communication between the various authorised external market players, such as suppliers or network operators, and the smart meter system is only permitted on the basis of digital certificates. In its central role as the smart meter gateway administrator, Stromnetz Berlin acts as the intermediary and service provider in this regard."The certification and the assumption of this new role enable us to offer the full service to our existing and future customers and creates new opportunities for cooperation.
