Stromnetz Berlin, a Vattenfall Group company, won a European public tender in late 2017 to operate the public lighting system in the period from 2018 to 2028. The new contract with the State of Berlin started on 1 October 2018.

On order of the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, the Berlin-based distribution system operator takes on the operation, maintenance, servicing and repair of the public lighting system for another ten years, effective immediately. Stromnetz Berlin is thus responsible for the entire public lighting system of the State of Berlin, which currently includes about 193,000 electric lamps, 31,000 gas lamps and 30 tunnel facilities. Stromnetz Berlin has been looking after the public lighting system in Berlin on order of the State of Berlin since 2011.

Implementation of a mobile job management system allows data on faults and corrective actions to be provided and processed in real time. In this way, the operator optimises the fault correction process and reduces downtimes. All Berlin residents can report defective lamps free of charge on 0800 110 2010. For some time already, Stromnetz Berlin has also offered Berlin residents the option of reporting these faults via the mobile app Stromnetz Berlin Lichtstörung, available for iOS and Android.
