Investement in security of supply in Spandau

Ground-breaking ceremony for the extension of the Tiefwerder substation

08.08.2024

Stromnetz Berlin is taking a special approach to the security of the electricity supply in Spandau. The Tiefwerder substation in Spandau is a facility from the 1970s, and it is now need of modernisation. However, there is not enough space at the site for a whole new building. An extension for modern technology is therefore to be built next to the building by 2029. At the same time, the existing plant is being remodelled during ongoing operations.

The ground-breaking ceremony took place today, 8 August, in the presence of Spandau’s District Councillor for Building, Planning, Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation Thorsten Schatz; the State Secretary for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises Dr. Severin Fischer, and Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director Dr. Erik Landeck.

Dr. Erik Landeck: "Space is a scarce commodity in our increasingly densely built-up city. Over the coming years, we’ll be needing around 30 new plots of land for new buildings - and always wherever electricity consumption in the city is likely to increase. That is a major challenge. It is rare that we can secure the operation and power supply for tens of thousands of Berliners at the current location and build the new substation at the same time. More electricity consumption also means more substations. But our modern technology then also reliably secures the growing electricity consumption."

Spandau's District Councillor for Building, Planning, Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation Thorsten Schatz: "The expansion of the Tiefwerder substation is a forward-looking project that will not only stabilise our energy supply, but will also adapt it to the requirements of coming years. The investment in modern technology and the modernisation of the plant are crucial to ensure a reliable supply of electricity for more than 10,000 households here in Spandau in the future."

Dr. Severin Fischer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Stromnetz Berlin and State Secretary for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprise: "The investment of 18 million euros in the Tiefwerder substation is a further step towards a secure and future-proof electricity supply for more than 10,000 households in Spandau. It is part of a series of investment measures that we are implementing throughout Berlin together with Stromnetz Berlin. We are ensuring that our energy infrastructure will be modernised and able to meet the increasing demands of a metropolis that wants to be climate-neutral by 2045."Construction of the the extension, which will measure 14 by 18 metres, is to commence in summer 2024. Following the planned completion of the building construction, the technology is to be installed from 2026. Commissioning is scheduled for 2029. All work, including the design of the outdoor facilities, is expected to be completed by 2031. The new building will have the same futuristic façade design as the existing building. The substation is one of around 20 Stromnetz Berlin plants that were built in the 1970s.
