Overhead lines in neighbourhoods and allotments disappearing

99 percent of our power lines are already underground. This enhances the appearance in the neighbourhoods and all over Berlin and protects our network from weather influences. We will also be laying the remaining overhead lines underground in the coming years. Most of these overhead lines are located in allotments or detached home settlements.

By laying the cables in the ground, we are also renewing our electricity grid and thus increasing the power supply security in your neighbourhood.

Here, you can see whether and when your area will be converted, how long the conversion will take and what steps will be taken.

You will find frequently asked questions and their answers at the bottom of the page. Likewise a contact to us.

  1. Inspection

The current status of the grid connection will be checked and documented.

  2. Civil engineering & grid cable laying

Cable trenches will be created, power cables laid and cable distribution cabinets installed. The surface of the ground will be restored (if necessary temporarily). Temporary restrictions will apply.

  3. Grid connection renovation

Depending on the result of the inspection (1st step), the type of follow-up renovation will be determined.

One of the following options will be implemented at your premises:

    a) The existing grid connection is reconnected from the overhead line network to the new cable network.

    b) The old grid connection is replaced by a new grid connection.

    c) The overhead line connection is replaced by a new grid connection.

A company commissioned by us will arrange an appointment with you for installation. There will be selective disturbances.

  4. Shutdown of overhead line network

End of supply via overhead line.

  5. Dismantling of overhead line network

Dismantling of overhead line and masts. Different measures may apply if public lighting is present on the overhead line/masts.

Questions and answers

Would you like to know why we are replacing the power lines and mains connections? You can find answers to your questions here:

Why are overhead lines being converted to an underground power grid?

In order to offer you better security of supply, we will be modernising our distribution network by laying low-voltage cables. Once the renovation is complete, your grid connection will meet the requirements of modern power consumption.

How will this be achieved?

The first step will be to arrange an inspection and determine the current supply situations.

The cables will then be laid in the paths or roads.
As soon as the cable laying is complete, the mains connections will be renovated.

After the renovation, the old grid connections will be dismantled if necessary.

Approximately three months after the final grid connection has been renovated, the overhead line network will be shut down.
In the final step, the overhead line network will be dismantled (different measures may be implemented for public/private street lighting).

I already have a cable connection, how will this be renovated?

For plastic connections, the cable will be reconnected from the overhead line to the cable laid in the ground. For metal connections, the building connection part will be replaced with a new building connection column. In both cases, the property will be without power during installation (approx. 1-2 h).

What is an overhead line connection?

An overhead line connection can be a building connection mast on the property, roof stands on the house or a gable connection on the house or arbour.

When do I need an electrical installation company?

For overhead line connections. You can find an electrical installation company listed in the Stromnetz Berlin GmbH installer register on our page installers.

Why do I have to pay the costs for an overhead line connection for the connection from the main connection column to the electricity meter myself?

According to the German Grid Connection Ordinance (NAV) § 13 para. 1, the connectee is liable to the grid operator for the proper installation, extension, modification and maintenance of the electrical system beyond the house connection fuse (system).

Where can I find a registered electrical installation company?

You can find an electrical installation company listed in the Stromnetz Berlin GmbH installer register on our page installers.

When will my connection be renovated?

We have published all current renovation projects at the top of this page. Please check the overview to see if your area is listed. The estimated timetable can be found in the project overview.

When will the overhead line be switched off?

We have published all current renovation projects at the top of this page. Please check the overview to see if your area is listed. The estimated timetable can be found in the project overview.

Will my electrical connected load on the house connection change?

The connected load will remain unchanged.

What is my electrical connected load on the house connection?

The connected load is generally 14.5 kVA (corresponds to 14,500 watts) for residential areas or detached houses and 8 kVA (corresponds to 8,000 watts) for allotments. (possibly different for electric hot water preparation, heat pump, charging infrastructure, etc.)

Can I get a higher electrical connected load as part of the renovation?

A separate service request (in writing) is required for this. A new grid connection contract will be required, which the landowner must agree to.

Am I the connectee as a lessee or tenant of a plot or an entire site?

Yes.

Why is a contact telephone number requested in the grid connection contract?

We require a contact telephone number from you in order to arrange an installation date between you and our company carrying out the work.

I am also supplied by my neighbour’s power connection. / I supply my neighbours from my electricity connection. How will the connection be renovated in this case?

A new cable network connection will be placed on the property directly next to the previous customer-owned cable distribution box. The new mains connection will be reconnected to the distributor. The co-supply remains intact.

The co-supplied property does not receive its own free grid connection.

These land users can request an individual and discounted offer for their own grid connection during the renovation measure.
