Expansion of the electricity grid is making good progress in the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin. Construction of a new cable run east of the Dahme begins today, Monday 21 December 2015. The first section, approximately 4.5 kilometres long, starts at Adlergestell 610. It is followed by an underground cable run along Rabindranath-Tagore-Straße. The cable run passes under the Dahme at Regattastraße and continues along Slevogtweg. It then follows Straße Zum Langen See until Grüner Trift and ends in Müggelheimer Straße. In total 56 kilometres of new underground cable will be installed beneath the streets and pavements along this route. The work is scheduled to be completed within one year.
The network expansion is necessary to accommodate increased local power generation in the city and to facilitate the integration of rising numbers of electric vehicles into the electricity grid. For the same reasons, expansion of the electricity grid is already underway in the Berlin districts of Köpenick and Grünau since mid-2014. The construction activities there include the new installation of a total of 16 kilometres of medium-voltage underground cable. The overall project will result in the installation of 116 kilometres of new underground medium-voltage cable. Raising the transmission voltage from 6 kV to 10 kV will also increase the security of supply for electricity customers in these districts. Construction of the Grünauer Straße section of the cable run west of the Dahme and the Wendenschloßstraße section east of the Dahme has already been completed.
All construction work is planned and carried out with a view to minimising inconvenience to residents and traffic. Residents are informed in due time about construction activities.
Construction work in Köpenick and Grünau
The construction work is part of the process of switching the medium voltage grid from the Grünau substation to the higher-performing, more modern substation on Landjägerstrasse.
