They are often grey, unremarkable, and can be found all over Berlin - the 16,500 electricity boxes and substations of Stromnetz Berlin. Every year, schoolchildren in the capital turn 500 of them into real eye-catchers with graffiti during project weeks. Around half of the boxes and stations have already been embellished in this way in recent years. The most creative of these are selected and honoured online and by a jury every year. The prizes for "Electricity Box Styling 2024" in the categories "Projects", "Classic" and "Substation" were presented by Berlin's State Secretary for Education Christina Henke and Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director Bernhard Büllmann on 29 January at the Moabit cogeneration plant. The winners of the competition come from Prenzlauer Berg, Reinickendorf, Neukölln, Lichterfelde, Pankow, Zehlendorf and Köpenick.
Berlin's State Secretary for Education Christina Henke: "The 'Electricity box styling’ competition is a wonderful example of how art and creativity can bring young people together. In it, pupils not only demonstrate their artistic talent, but their ability to enrich public spaces with new perspectives as well. I am delighted to be able to honour the winners of the 2024 competition for managing to implement their ideas in a unique way and helping to shape a piece of Berlin. A big thank you to all the participants for their commitment and passion!"
Stromnetz Berlin Managing Director Bernhard Büllmann: "Our grid reliably supplies the capital with electricity day after day. Yet the grid is only visible in a few places, in particular at the electricity boxes and substations. Over ten years ago, we set out to make Berlin a more beautiful and colourful place. The fact that our electricity box styling competition continues to encourage the creativity of schoolchildren every year is a genuine success story that we are very proud of."
Once again this year, a large number of the young artists involved came to the traditional prize-giving ceremony. A jury consisting of media representatives, citizens, graffiti artists and representatives from Stromnetz Berlin had previously selected the winning motifs. The prizes were then handed over to the school pupils in the form of vouchers for activities that they were able to choose themselves. The winners were: (pictures of all boxes):
